In the last 6 decades Dr. Urmil Kumar Thapliyal has a distinct place in art, literature and Indian theatre.
Dr. Urmil Kumar Thapliyal is the recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contributions to Indian theatre as a director. He has done PhD in dialectical Theatre and is the founder member of Darpan.
Shri Thapaliyal has staged and directed around 300 plays. Among notable plays written and directed by him are Yahoodi Ki Ladki, Harishchanner ki Ladai, Kanyadaan, Bahadur Kalarin, Nagri Nautanki, Barkha Bahar, Mahasati, Kanupriya, Pyare Harichand ki Kahani Rah Jayegi and Bhaunri Katha Kagzi Hai Pairahan .
He has given a new lease of life to traditional theatre forms such as Nautanki, Swang and Bhagat. He has been a prolific writer. Besides drama, he has written stories, articles and satires which have published in many leading Hindi magazines and periodicals. Shri Thapliyal has also been honored with an award and a fellowship by the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi. UP Govt. felicitated him with the Yash Bharati award.Dr. Thapliyal was invited to participate in several prestigious National festivals including Bharat Rang Mahotsav. He also got the opportunity to perform in 8th Theatre Olympics 2018.
